Caution

CAUTION / be careful of what you dream. A 50 minute work in three parts, CAUTION is a multi-layer response to pop culture, dance icons and the ongoing struggles of family life. Within smartly constructed popular genres of dance and stories, CAUTION works with commercial stardom and dance expectations -- from Madonna to Elizabeth Streb, from Gus Solomon to Gene Kelly -- as catalyst for measuring oneself and success against dreams. Bernard’s movement shifts into different kinds of pop culture dance genres, but the movement maintains an inherent raw quality. There is a sense of urgent striving in the fulfillment of expectations along with the danger of facing ones’ real and imagined fears. Ultimately, CAUTION is about the defiant struggle to continually find courage.

“Karen Bernard rides a wave of acerbic and unpretentious commentary that tramples over the fourth wall." -- Virginia Preston, Montreal.com.
